Music- Does our world exist without it?

This may be argued but music is the cornerstone of all forms of modern day entertainment. A world without notes, tunes or tracks is simply unphantomnable! What would people do to kerb boredom? What would the word 'fun' encompass outside of music? Music is one of those phenomenas which one cannot ignore or exist without. This may be going out on a limb, but I consider music to be a language on its own- almost like sign language! Whether it be in the form of popular or high culture, it is constantly integrated into our lives- from the opera, to a night-club and even the church. Music has evolved with technology, from the primitive gramophone to the latest Ipods, digital television channels; who are dedicated to the broad caste of different genres of music to the latest cell phones; who's appeal to the youth culture is mainly through the amount of music it can store. All these technologies are almost solely dependent on music, and manufacturers then utilise this knowledge, thus the popularity of cellphones and more recently Ipods. Music creates a kind of solidarity for certain groups in society, where individuals can relate to each other by the kind of music that appeals to them. The technological advancements of music however do create a divide in societies, where individuals who can afford the new and expensive mediums can be at an advantage, and those who cannot are simply left out in the cold. What needs to be understood however is that it is not the actual message-music- which creates this divide, but the mediums it is delivered under- Ipods and cellphones.Traces of music can be found in the soundtracks of some of the best films and features in history, dating back to the silent era. Music whether diagetic or not adds to the quality of films, where a director can demonstrate a certain emotion or impending actions through non verbal means, namely music. In short, music is the soul of our modern day existence.

I strongly agree. Music plays a vital part in our lIives. I cant imagine life without music. when i am feeling sad or blue i play music, when i'm happy i play music, so music keeps me going, it is some form of inspiration. Also in films music plays a big role, adding life to them. Music really is a language, we speak it, we sing it, we dance to it. Music is part of us.

Londeka I agree with you completely. Music has become such an integral part of our lives and I can honestly tell you that a day without music for me isn't a day worth living!

Music allows each individual to explore his or her own emotions. I know of people who turn to music to lift their moods or to find inspiration. Music in whatever form of existence should be appreciated!

Well done Londeka!

firstly i want to say this is an awesum blog. ok, well i agree music does play a very important role in our lives and construction of identity.

people listen to different types of music because of their different identities. the reason why it plays an important role is because sometimes listening to music allows you to forget about all your problems, when you sad and happy. each type of genre is unique and it allows people to identify with it.

Music is the reason that gadgets like the ipod have become so popular or even exists for that matter. If there wasn’t such a demand for music in today’s society there wouldn’t be such a demand for gadgets like the ipod or mp3 players of even for software that allows our cell phones and laptops to play music. I always think about how boring a movie would be without its soundtrack it would probably have very little if any emotional effect.
